This bangle has a hand carved signature for Butler and Wilson which, according to the dealer I purchased it from in Paris, has some interesting history behind it as follows.

Butler and Wilson were antique dealers first and foremost at Portobello market in London. Later they started to design jewelry which was mostly productions of vintage pieces. They had a booth in Harrods where they were selling antique and Art Deco jewelry, as well as their contemporary line in the 1970's. During this time they purchased a bangle lot and had them signed with their name for their enterprise. Book value is $800.
A couple of things about Bakelite that distinguishes the old from the new is that the "French" Bakelite will never test positive because they have all been resin washed. Plus you see a lot of "reworked" Bakelite today (pieces made from old Bakelite pieces) these have been resin washed also and will not test. There is tons of Bakelite coming into the U.S. from China and these will not test positive either. With Bakelite being all the rage and selling for next to nothing on eBay these days, I hope this bit of information will help you as a buyer have a little more insight as to what you are spending your money on.
All my jewelry is vintage or antique previously worn jewelry for the most part. For this reason I try to include close-up photos for your examination, but please feel free to ask questions before you make your purchase. |
