Scarf pins were popular during these Victorian years of 1890-1910. Of coarse the griffin motifs were also part of this Art Nouveau style. Here you have them combined for a delightful display of the period.
This scarf pin, measuring three inches, has a sterling shaft. The head, a lion griffin, is gold plate over brass and houses a red cabochon eye that looks like garnet, but is too small to test. He is peaking over a turquoise stone with gorgeous yellow flex. I was told this is real turquoise, but don't know enough about the stone to tell one way or the other. The yellow does go all the way through it, but I'd be inclined to say it is early glass, as the close-up photos show surface crackling at the tip. On the back there is a very tiny raised piece of metal that could carry a mark; however, it's so small I can't determine it for sure. This is a terrific collector’s piece. Book value $95.
All my jewelry is vintage or antique previously worn jewelry for the most part. For this reason I try to include close-up photos for your examination, but please feel free to ask questions before you make your purchase.
